My Quest!

So I'm what the french call, a fat guy! (They just say it in French!) This past week my brother started Pop Warner football, and it got me fired up! I couldn't help but think of all the hours I spent at practice, lifting weights, and playing the greatest game ever! I miss it all! Then I got to thinking about my current predicament. I look like I'm ready to go tubing down the Salt River, what with my spare tire and all! When I tell people about my old football stories, they look at me like "Yeah right kid! You were probably just the water boy!" So all of these emotions and thoughts swirling around my head (which now looks way to small for my body) have finally lit the proverbial fire inside me. I want my son to believe the stories he hears about Daddy's "glory days", and not think, "Yeah right, Dad. You were probably just the water boy!"
So now begins my quest! I'm on a mission to get back in shape! (and not just the shape of an oval!) So I put it out there so any of you who are bored enough to read this can hold me accountable. Bring on the pain, and don't hold back!
My first goal: I want to be under 300lbs. by my birthday, October 9th. I currently weigh in at a lean 326 lbs. That gives me 66 days. If you have any suggestions or advice, it is gladly welcome. Also, if any of you would like to poke fun at the fat guy, that's also welcome! It drives me. And as you can probably tell, I don't get offended, so bring it on!

You and me both man. I need to do the same, but I always run out of steam.

This is an important subject, since in men old age begins at 28. That is when your mind and body start to break down. Excessive weight just makes things worse.

Ask me how I know.

Diet is the biggest factor to losing weight, and it's also the biggest hurdle. Soda is the worst culprit for me. I did well for a while and quit soda outright, and then I regressed. Shouldn't have done that.

Fire4Effect had some good advice on the subject of diet. He said,

You are not dieting for a time. You are not dieting to lose 100 pounds.

You are dieting for a better quality of life.

You are dieting to live a longer and happier life with your family.

You are dieting in preparation of a bigger event.

These are life time changes. If you diet with the goal of simply losing 100 or more lbs., then when you hit your goal you WILL begin to slide back.

Remember this: Eat less; move more.

There's a ton of places online that you can find to get started.

Go slow when you start working out or you'll injure yourself. Trust me on this. Don't try to do everything at once. My shoulder is still messed up from injuring it last year.

Build muscle. Lots of it; it'll help burn fat. Muscle will also help you carry around your weight easier.

Thanks for the tips! I know how you feel about the soda. If there's no coke in heaven, I don't want to go! That and french fries are my biggest vices.

Some of the things I'm trying this week are:

Making sure I drink 64 oz. of water a day. It'll help me feel less hungry, and the colder the water, the more calories you burn. Plus I'm hoping it'll help cut my dependency on coke!

Making sure I get 8 hours of sleep. I read an article that talked about the relationship between weight gain and poor sleep patterns that made a lot of good sense. I average about 5 hours right now, and only because I'm a late night TV junkie! Adult Swim and Man Vs. Food are some more of my vices. I just can't turn away!

Taking my lunch to work, and having plenty of healthy snacks during the day. My uncle is a nutritionist, (which could be why he's embarrassed to talk to me in public!) and he said that having several snacks through the day will help jump start your metabolism (which jumped ship a long time ago! I might as well just tape my food directly to my body since that's where it's going to end up anyway!).

The last thing I'm doing is stretching twice everyday and doing a light stretch band work. The stretching is awesome! I don't know why I haven't been doing this my whole life! My back hurts less, and it gets my body feeling awake in the morning, and relaxed at night. The stretch band makes me feel like an 80 year old woman at rehab (No offense Grandma Dunlap!), but it's getting my muscles going so I can start with dumb bells next week!

I feel like I'm slowly inching my way back into the pool, but I know if I jump in like I was in the shape I used to be, I'll just end up hurting myself. I think the hardest part about falling out of shape is admitting that you can't do the things you once could. Like seeing my feet when I'm standing up!

I notice that the best way for me to loose weight is to cut out the little things. My biggest vice is my ice cream at night. It's really hard for me to give up, but that's when I lose the most, giving that and the soda up. Oh, it's hard for a little while dragging without the Coke, but by flushing out my body with the water, pretty soon, you don't notice it as much. I go through the withdraws with major migraines, but eventually they go away too. I know you hate apples, so find another good snack that you like that you can munch on when you get hungry that you can grab quickly.

You can do I ! I know you can! You are a strong willed individual. An inspiration to us all.

Heeeeere, Fatty, Fatty, Fatty!

(You said I could poke fun at you.)

(And I'm fat too, so it's more like a pep talk.)

Moderation in all things. That's the only way to not go crazy from lack of sugar or steak or potato soup or Doritos.

And you're a guy. Which means, you will lose weight quick. Which means, phbttttt!

G'luck!

I would recommend the book "Body for Life" by Bill Phillips. He helps you learn to eat things that will be healthy for you and help you lose weight as exercises that help. I know a lot of people who have used this program and really like it. It's not dieting, its changing your lifestyle.

I actually do have the "Body for Life" book. I'm using things from it and the "ABS Diet" book. I'm trying not to fad diet cause I don't want to gain it all back. I'm really trying to learn how to eat, so that I can pass that on to my family!

So I got on your blog for the first time today and read your quest entry and thought - Go Craig! I'll I can say is it's possible to lose weight, it just takes time if you want to do it right. So be patient.:) It took me over 2 years to lose 70 pounds, but I've been able to keep it off and even after having kids. (I'm back to losing again now that baby number 3 is here.)
By the way, your family is awesome! Your little boy is to die for and of course you have the coolest wife ever- so with that motivation I know you can do it! Good luck!
